Highlights
Immerse yourself in one of the most biodiverse forests in the world
Explore the heart of the Tambopata National Reserve and actively participate in the conservation of its forests through citizen science on this Amazon ecolodge in Peru.
Our beloved Tambopata Research Center is located within the Tambopata National Reserve in front of the Bahuaja Sonene National Park in Madre de Dios PERU, making it one of the most remote lodges in South America! The lodge's pristine location means that it's surrounded by the best wildlife the Peruvian Amazon jungle has to offer and you will be able to discover it throughout our unique explorations.
Note this is not a hotel, but a comfortable ecolodge with only 28 rooms in the middle of the rainforest.
The Tambopata Research Center experience is ideal for nature lovers and photographers.
* The lodge features 300 meters (almost 1000 feet) of elevated walkways! These walkways are located on the perfect level of the forest — in between the canopy and the floor — where wildlife becomes more active.
*A trip to the Tambopata Research Center includes a visit to the 2 most important clay licks in the region: the Colorado and Chuncho Clay licks.
*Support Research and Conservation. Since 1989, researchers have been carrying out groundbreaking conservation research from the Tambopata Research Center.

Such a wonderful experience deep in a part of the Amazon, Tambopata NP. They really involve you with what is happening at the research centre with evening lectures. The meals are outstanding and the rooms are comfortable and I had the best sleep. Dino our guide was outstanding. The river trip to see the Macaw claylicks was a beautiful outing. We saw Capybaras along the river and it was very scenic. The staff are friendly and very engaging. As a tour operator who sends clients to AFRICA for safari, I was hugely satisfied. Thank you, gracious. Food & drinks: Good was simply delicious Read all

An amazing experience in the Peruvian jungle. the information about the centre was very accurate so I knew what to expect but was blown away by the experience and competence of my guide for the four nights, Juan Carlos Yatto. JC was looking for birds for me from the moment he collected me at the airport, so we saw birds on the drive and on the boat ride as well as on the excursions themselves. I was in Peru three weeks and JC was my best guide by far. Don't miss the clay licks for sure, and the tower is also well worth the climb. Food and people are wonderful and the research very interesting. Read all

So sahen wir u.a. Read all

The place to go if you want to see Macaws in the Peruvian rainforest. We stayed at the Tambopata Reaearch Centre (TRC) for three days and had Juan Carlos Yatto as our guide for the duration of our stay. We loved the mission of the TRC ie Macaw conservation and the link between Macaw nest site availability and the overall health of the rainforest. Juan Carlos Yatto (there is another JC at the research centre) was a fantastic guide and really made a difference to our experience at the TRC. His knowledge of the different species of wildlife and plants was amazing, his ability to spot things in the day or at night was phenomenal and he really made things accessible for our group. His English is excellent (including great humour when appropriate) and is a super guy. I really do recommend the TRC abd Juan Carlos Yatto as a guide. We saw an abundance of wildlife of all descriptions thanks to him and learned a huge amount without being overloaded. Read all

Two planes, a bus and a boat…that’s how we made it to TRC, and every minute was worth it. Tambopata is a jewel, from the moment you are greeted by the guide assigned to you (Juan Carlos Gonzales for us) to the last boat ride back to civilization. Juan Carlos was amazing…on just one hike he found five of the seven species of monkeys in the area! He is truly an expert..can hear, see and even SMELL animals, birds and insects to point out to us. We upgraded to a deluxe suite and it was decadent! An elegant outdoor tub and shower on a private balcony was soo nice’ Although we went in the rainy season, it never rained while on a hike or excursion. It rained for a few minutes on our late afternoon cruise , but not enough to dampen our enthusiasm, or prevent us from seeing a capybara in the mid! (And despite the warning of a lot of mosquitoes, I have been bitten more in my own back yard!) The bar is great, there’s PLENTY of food…we are going home feeling so lucky to have had such a great connection to the beauty of the Amazon. Read all

We had a fantastic time for our 3N/4D stay at Tambopata Research Center. The whole experience was marvellous. Rooms and facilities were great and meals superb. The Staff, ably led by Tanya the manager, were all friendly and helpful. This is the only lodge actually inside the Tambopata National Park, and we enjoyed being so "remote". I like that you have one guide who coordinates and takes you on all your activities; Jair our guide was amazing. One morning our planned activity was rained out, and I liked that they have alternative "wet weather" activities planned. There are lectures each night by researchers, which were very interesting. Also citizen science projects that you can participate in. All up, it was a fantastic way to experience the Peruvian Amazon. Read all

I can't express how amazing our guides were. Incredibly knowledgeable and able to spot birds, frogs, spiders, animals, etc. with an almost unbelievable ability. The research and contributions to the jungle they are making at the Center are to be commended. The facilities were nice and kept clean and the staff was great, but between the walls in the rooms being open to the jungle, the heat, the bugs, underpowered fans, having to completely cover up for hikes due to bugs and then getting overheated, etc. it made for a tough stay. The food was good but after a couple days became repetitive. I would recommend this for serious birders who are willing to endure a bit for an incredible adventure. Read all

Tambopata Research Center is a childhood dream. Waking up in the middle of the night to a heavy rainstorm and the sounds of the jungle merely an arms length away is a balm for the soul and I will mentally return to my nights at TRC for as long as I live. TRC is remote, beautiful, and teeming with life and I'm immensely grateful to the entire staff for their hard work and dedication in making this dream come true. Our guide Timo was arguably the best part of the trip. Not only was he knowledgeable about the forrest, but, when prompted, he was very generous in sharing more about the local culture, as well as stories from his own life. Thank you Timo! Tania was a fantastic leader at the lodge, helping everything run smoothly. I forget the masseuse's name, but she was spectacular and brought my legs back to life after a few long days walking! And Luis at the bar was like a magician... truly. I thought we might have wine and beer, but no, these are best-in-class, best-in-world cocktails. I will never forget the witch's crystal ball. I thought, "I'm in the middle of the jungle and I get to have this?!?" it really is magic. Not to mention the food! My immense compliments to the kitchen. I had the best chicharrones of my life at TRC and was nourished with delicious fruits and vegetables every day. The macaw lick was awe-inspiring. We saw monkeys and a caiman too and plenty of other birds. More than the animals, though, I was struck by how fascinated I was by the forrest itself and all the creepy crawlers at night (as someone who is a little scared of bugs, seeing them in their natural habitat somehow took away that fear). Seeing an electric blue tarantula was a highlight. The spiked papaya trees, Liliana vines, ayuahuasca plants, and so on really made me feel like I was in a book. We stayed 3 nights and I didn't want to miss a thing, but if I had more time, I would have loved to spend time just lounging at the lodge, reading and writing in a hammock and listening to the sounds around me. It's a once in a lifetime experience... but darn it if I'm not coming back! Other helpful tips - Remember it will be very hot. Prepare to rinse off 3-4 times a day to cool off. Bring a small hand fan. Temps rose to almost 100 while there. At night, I propped a small hand fan on a book beside me and the moving air helped me cool off and sleep easily. - Prepare for noise / prepare to wake early. While TRC is genuinely luxurious, you're still in a lodge in the middle of the jungle. I was lucky to be on a corner, so I didn't hear much, but my brother could hear people on either side of him talking at 4AM, going to the bathroom, etc. - Tip your guide and the people who work here. They deserve it! TRC: thank you, thank you, thank you. I hope to see you again. Read all

I am normally not a nature-oriented person but spending a few days in the rainforest was mind-blowing. Our guide, Juan Carlos, was knowledgeable, passionate about his work, and a fun person to go on a several hours long hike to boot. He made sure we were taking the activities at our own pace, answered all our questions and had a seemingly endless knowledge of the plants and animals. The lodge is located in a protected area of the rainforest and as a result, the biodiversity is amazing and the staff are very respectful and protective of the wildlife. For a note on the lodging, late september is the end of dry season and also the hottest time of year. If I were to come back, I would upgrade to a room with a fan as there is no AC in the facility. Lodging was clean and I personally enjoyed the chance to unplug and sleep so close to nature. Without hyperbole this was a once in a lifetime experience and I cannot recommend it enough. Read all

We had a truly amazing time at Tambopata Research Center and its sister lodge, Refugio. Days were filled with long walks in the jungle to see all the incredible wildlife and plant life, the evening talks with the researchers were thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring, and meals with like minded travelers were a pleasure. Our rooms were extremely comfortable and well laid out, the food was varied, healthy and tasty, and the staff really went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed and that our stay was going well. Truly couldn't recommend this experience more. Read all

My husband and I recently had the opportunity to visit the Tambopata Research Center in the Amazon rainforest, and it was truly an unforgettable experience! We did the 5 day, 4 night experience, which was so worth it. I personally think this is the perfect amount of time as it gave us the flexibility to have more opportunities to see wildlife, but also moments of relaxing at the lodge. We booked the trip through Tambopata Travel, with Mike. He was extremely helpful, very organized, and answered all 5 million questions I had haha. He was a very effective communicator and I would recommend anyone and everyone use him to help plan your rainforest experience. Before I get to my review, my only recommendation to the center would be for them to incorporate more of a variety of activities. A majority of the available activities are equivalent to walking around the rainforest looking for animals and learning about the surroundings. Which was amazing to me, but could lead to boredom for some. Thankfully, we had out guide Timo who made every walk through the rainforest interesting. Reaching the lodge does take about 3.5 hours, but if you embrace this part of the journey it only makes everything better. Once we arrived, I found the lodge to be absolutely amazing given its remote location. There will be bugs and there will be loud animal sounds, I think it’s important to remember we are guest in these animals home. Having spent 11 days in Peru prior to this trip, I can confidently say that the food at the lodge was the best we had consistently enjoyed throughout our travels. We also had the opportunity to work with other guides in Peru, all of whom were booked through reputable companies, but none compared to our guide, Timo, in terms of his English proficiency and extensive knowledge. The bar manager was also a highlight; he was very knowledgeable about alcohol and offered great recommendations and was able to make a variety of drinks based on what we were wanting to experience. All of the staff at Tambopata were very friendly and always had a smile on their face, especially the busser, I unfortunately missed his name, but he was great and so friendly. From start to finish, the trip was filled with incredible moments, largely thanks to our amazing guide, Timo. Timo was hands down the most knowledgeable guide I have ever encountered. His expertise about the rainforest was impressive, and he had an uncanny ability to spot wildlife that we would have completely missed without him. It was raining one day and we were willing to go out in the rain and Timo was right there with us. We had the chance to see a wide variety of animals, far exceeding my expectations.Timo also provided us with extensive knowledge about the plants and trees, helping us to understand the ecosystem as a whole. I was seriously blown away by how much he knew about the rainforest. Timo’s insights made the experience not just about the wildlife we saw, but also about the profound interconnectedness of life in the rainforest. We also appreciated Timo’s insight about the nature of wildlife viewing in the rainforest; some days were bustling with activity while others were quieter. I think it’s important for anyone wanting to travel to the Amazon to remember, this is a vast ecosystem with thousands of acres of wilderness- not a zoo. Overall, my time at the Tambopata Research Center was filled with awe-inspiring moments, and I learned so much about the rainforest. I highly recommend this experience to anyone looking to connect deeply with nature. Just remember to go with the flow and appreciate the rainforest for what it is! Read all

Fantastic lodge and research station deep in the reserve and the Amazon forest far from all visible signs of humanity, dense rainforest teeming with birds, animals, insects - it balances the discomfort of the steamy forest heat and biting insects perfectly with a little luxury when you are not out on excursions in the jungle - exactly what one would want from an Amazon experience.
