Tambopata Aerobotany
You climb higher and higher until you reach the top of the Canopy Tower. Suddenly, the whole jungle looks like your kingdom, stretching on as far as the eye can see. Now, your Aerobotany excursion begins: it’s time to unleash the drone! Soon, you’ll be flying high above the canopy.
In the middle of the spectacularly diverse rainforest, you get the chance to contribute to science in a way that few ever do. You’ll help use a special drone to take aerial photos of the rainforest canopy, studying it over time!
Aerobotany is where classic field biology and cutting-edge technology meet. It’s the brainchild of Dr. Varun Swamy, an ecologist who’s been researching the Peruvian Amazon rainforest for over a decade. He believes that Citizen Scientists can help gather data on the Amazon jungle.
In the middle of the spectacularly diverse rainforest, you get the chance to contribute to science in a way that few ever do. You’ll help use a special drone to take aerial photos of the rainforest canopy, studying it over time!
Due to the Canopy Tower’s height — it stretches over 30 meters (100 feet) above the ground — you take in panoramic views of the Amazon Rainforest. From there, you’ll work with our researcher to program the drone on its daily route and release it. Finally, the researcher will teach you about the drone’s photos, and how they contribute to rainforest research. Aerobotany forms a part of our larger Wired Amazon project, which connects everyday people to jungle science! Because we feature tons of online initiatives, you can continue helping out with Aerobotany and other Wired Amazon projects once you head back home.
Why You’ll Love Flying Above the Treetops with Aerobotany?
- Contribute to Jungle Science: While it may seem like just a fun activity as you fly a drone in the jungle, by participating in the project, you really do help Amazonian science advance! The data you collect improves our understanding of the biological rhythms and life cycles of rainforest trees, and helps monitor and protect these valuable ecosystems in the long term.
- Delve into the Rainforest Canopy: The Canopy Tower is a must-visit for all our Rainforest Expeditions guests. With Aerobotany, you get a chance to enjoy the natural beauty and incredible wildlife of the treetops. But even more than that, you delve deeper into the canopy’s evolution and biology. This makes it a fantastic activity for kids and adults passionate about science.
