Ceiba Walk
You’ve been walking through the dense jungle for nearly an hour, passing larger and larger rainforest trees. Your jaw dropped at the first Brazil Nut tree you saw, stretching into the sky. Then, your mind spun as you spotted an Ironwood tree and learned that it’s stood for half a millennium, watching over our puny human history. After passing all these rainforest giants, nothing else can impress you-you think, anyway. Then, as you near the end of the Ceiba Hike, you spot it: a tree-like nothing you’ve ever seen.
In the old-growth forest that surrounds our Rainforest Expeditions lodges, you’re often dwarfed by majestic, ancient jungle trees. But the Ceiba tree you’ll find on our hike stands in a league of its own. On the Ceiba Hike, you embark on a treasure hunt for tree lovers, starting at the lodge, exploring flora and fauna along the way, and culminating in the spectacular Ceiba itself. You have to see this tree’s incredible size to believe it. The Ceiba is at least 50 meters (150 feet) tall and has grown higher and higher near the Tambopata River for hundreds of years. Ceibas, also called Kapoks or Silk Cotton Trees, are known and admired for their large size all around the Amazon.

Why You’ll Love the Ceiba Hike?
- Let the Amazon Amaze You: The incredible Ceiba Tree is bound to be one of the largest trees you will ever see, making it well worth the hike. In fact, the trail itself is fascinating, passing through the beautiful primary rainforest. You’ll have the chance to see monkeys, birds, and other animals on the way. Finally, your guide will help you explore the natural history of the forest, point out interesting jungle features along the way, and introduce you to this rainforest giant.
- Learn About Ceiba’s Natural and Cultural Importance: Ceiba Trees are miraculous in every way. The trees’ softwood protects them from loggers, who look for more durable wood types, and Ceibas’ fast growth rate helps them rise to immense proportions. As you’ll see, this tree’s buttressed root system stretches so far, it would take 50 people holding hands to encircle it! When you arrive at the massive tree, you’ll discover Ceiba’s historical and spiritual significance for native peoples throughout the Amazon.
