GET A TASTE Of local life in the Amazon

Jungle Farm Visit

Recommend Morning or afternoon Duration 3 hours Lodge Posada Amazonas, Refugio Amazonas
Difficulty I Best at All year
In the fertile jungle garden, every plant bursts with growth and flavor. The skinny Papaya trees bear their heavy fruits, the Pineapples poke from spiky bushes, and lush Cacao trees hide their purple pods near the trunk. This is a far cry from the cornfields of North America or the vineyards of Europe. On your Jungle Farm Visit, you’ll learn the ins and outs of organic rainforest agriculture. Even more than this, you’ll discover a local way of life.

Many of our lodge guides hail from nearby communities and grew up immersed in jungle farming. While ecotourism has grown in Tambopata in recent years, tropical agriculture remains hugely important to local people. Farmers grow Bananas, Papaya, Yucca, and other well-known crops. But alongside these famous foods, they also grow many traditional local plants that their cultures have used for centuries. The Jungle Farm Visit gives you a chance to meet local farmers and taste jungle ingredients at an organic farm. Above all, locals are deeply proud of their heritage and way of life. As a result, they’d love to share these farming traditions with you!

Why You’ll Love the Jungle Farm Visit

  • Discover Amazing Tropical Plants: At the jungle farm, you’ll get to find out how your favorite tropical foods are grown and you’ll discover entirely new foods! Farmers will explain how and why they organically grow a great variety of crops. Finally, you get to see, smell, touch, and taste fruits you’ve never even heard of, like Copuazu, “Fish-eye” Chilis, and Cocona.

  • Gain Insight into Local Ways of Life: Farmers teach you about agricultural life in the Amazon, connecting their practices to age-old traditions in the region. Local communities are made up of the Ese Eja, an indigenous people native to Tambopata, along with folks who migrated here from the Peruvian highlands several decades ago. Farming is an integral part of life here, and you’ll end the visit with a greater understanding of local culture and traditions.
