The World of Butterflies
You and your guide tread silently along the trail, trying not to step on cracking leaves or snapping branches. These trails around our Tambopata Research Center lodge are rich with animal and plant life. Today, however, you’re after something more elusive: the colorful butterflies that flit around our Tambopata forests.
As you hike, you keep your eyes peeled for flashes of brilliant color. Instead, your guide suddenly points to a brown, rather drab-looking butterfly with a few dark spots. Is that all? But in a flash, the giant insect opens its wings to reveal its true identity: it’s a Blue Morpho! With their dazzling blue hue, these butterflies are stars of the Amazon jungle. But Blue Morphos are only one of the hundreds of spectacular species you might spot along the trail.
Many different species of butterflies live in the Tambopata National Reserve, home to our most secluded lodge. In fact, Peru has the most types of butterflies in the world (around 3,700) and the Tambopata Reserve itself holds over 1,000 species! Your experienced guide can spot even the most evasive, camouflaged butterfly, and teach you all about jungle butterfly behavior as well.
