Refugio Amazonas & Tambopata Research Center – 4 nights
PERUVIAN AMAZON TOURS
Day 1: Welcome to Tambopata!
- Arriving in Puerto Maldonado, the capital of Madre de Dios, join the transfer of 1 hour by bus and 1 hour by boat to the lodge. Your first tasting of our Amazonian cuisine will be during the boat trip, while you leave the city behind and enjoy the incredible landscapes during the tour.
- What to expect at Refugio Amazonas?– A charming refuge in the middle of a chestnut forest, with a bar, massage room, and dining room service. With the Tambopata National Reserve behind him. This eco-hostel is the headquarters of Wired Amazon, the first citizen science project to turn its guests into citizen scientists.
- What is included in the Accommodation?– A 45 m2 room, with mosquito nets over the beds, a private bathroom, and a window open to the forest, maximizing your contact with nature.
- What is included during your stay?– Three daily meals, teas, coffee, activities guided excursions, welcome drink upon arrival at the hostel, and transfers to and from the airport. Guides are assigned in a ratio of 10: 1
- A half-hour walk from the hostel takes us to the 35-meter-high canopy tower, a staircase with railings will provide us with safe access to the top of the tower, from which we can contemplate the impressive forest of the National Reserve of Tambopata. From the top, it is also possible to see different species of birds such as toucans, macaws, and raptors among other species.

- Every night at our open lab, join us in the fascinating world of science and learn about the projects we are running at the lodge. Our Wired Amazon Program develops citizen science projects that you can be part of.
Day 2: From Brazilian Nut forest to floodplain forest
- After breakfast transfer to Tambopata Research Center by boat
- Tambopata Research Center awaits– a spacious boutique eco-lodge, with a bar, a massage center, and buffet service in the heart of the National Reserve of Tambopata, being the only lodge inside the reserve surrounded by dozens of macaw nests and a clay lick just next to the lodge, this place becomes a paradise for macaw lovers.
- Accommodation includes rooms from 21 mts to 83 mts suites with a private bathroom and an open window facing the forest.
- Your stay includes three meals daily, tea, coffee, guided excursions and activities, refreshments upon arriving, and transfers to and from the airport. We assign guides on private small groups of 6:1
- This afternoon join the Overlook A three to five-kilometer hike will lead us to overlooks commanding magnificent views of the Tambopata winding its way into the lowlands. The forest on this trail, regenerating the old bamboo forest, is good for Howler Monkey and Dusky Titi Monkey.
- You will have the option of hiking out at night when most of the mammals are active but difficult to see. Easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories.
Day 3: A party full of colors and sounds, the clay licks
- On most clear mornings of the year, dozens of large macaws and hundreds of parrots congregate on this large river bank in a raucous and colorful spectacle that inspired a National Geographic cover story. Discretely located fifty meters from the cliff, we will observe Green-winged, Scarlet, and Blue-and-gold Macaws and several species of smaller parrots descend to ingest clay. Outings are at dawn when the lick is most active.
Macaw Claylick in the Tambopata National Reserve
- This five-kilometer trail covers the prototypical rainforest with immense trees crisscrossed by creeks and ponds. Amongst the figs, ceibas, and shihuahuacos we will go for a monkey search Squirrel, Brown Capuchin, and Spider Monkeys as well as peccaries. TRC is located within this habitat.
- Ten minutes upriver from the lodge explore the island where is a tiny pond with a platform in the middle. It is a great place to spot waterfowl such as Muscovy duck, sunbittern, and hoatzin along with the woodpeckers, oropendolas, flycatchers, and parakeets that call this pond their home.
- After dinner, scientists will provide a night lecture, an in-depth look at the biology of macaws, their feeding habits, the theories for clay lick use, their breeding and feeding ecology, population fluctuations, and the threats to their conservation.
Day 4: Let's explore the aguajales
- Every morning is different at the clay lick, and because of that you have another chance to join the morning excursion
- An entirely different habitat characterized by smaller, thinner trees atop hills and slopes is covered by this five-kilometer trail of terra firme forest. Saddleback tamarins are frequently found here. As we walk near the limits of the swamp we will also keep our eyes open for rare tapir tracks.
- Growing on the remains of an oxbow lake and providing both arboreals as well as terrestrial mammals with fruits throughout the year, the Aguaje palms are one of the most important food sources in the rainforest. Demand for these fruits and great conditions for planting rice make the palm swamp also one of the most threatened habitats.
Day 5: Thank you!
- It is time to say goodbye, as the expedition comes to an end.
- Your visit will make a direct contribution to Wired Amazon and the National Reserve of Tambopata.
- You will take the journey back to the city to the airport for your national flight onwards.

The lodge is located in the middle of the forest accessible only by boat. The experience was very unique and exciting. Service is great, and the fun part are the nature activities and tours the hotel offers for free. We had an amazing tour guide that had a lot of knowledge and was fun to spend time with. The rooms are totally open to the forest which is really cool the struggle is the there is no privacy at all in between the rooms, also food was pretty basic. All together a very unique experience. This hotel is the perfect blend of comfort and hospitality, with the natural experience. The hotel is reached by a hours boat ride from Puerto Maldonado, expertly organized and accomplished. Most staff are members of the local Esa Ejja community. The food is good and plentiful. Hot water is always available and lovely bedding features mosquito nets. There is of course no air conditioning (one side wall is open in rach room) and the electricity is off for a few hours at night affecting overhead fans, so I was glad to have brought a small battery powered fan for sleeping. But the best of the experience is the wildlife. Our expert guide Oscar Mishaja introduced us to nearly 100 bird species, along with caimans, river otters, poison dart frogs and capybara. A trip of a lifetime. Read all

Read all
