Days 6 Dificulty III Lodge Refugio Amazonas, Tambopata Research Center
Type Adventure Amazon Tours Type group size Private Best season May - October

Day 1: Climb the canopy tower

  • Arrive in Puerto Maldonado, the capital of Madre de Dios, and join a 1-hour bus and 1-hour boat journey to the lodge. Your first taste of the Amazon cuisine will be in the river while you let the city behind to enjoy the amazing jungle landscapes

  • Refugio Amazonas awaits – a spacious ecolodge, with a bar, a massage center, and buffet service with the Tambopata National Reserve behind it. This eco-lodge is home to Wired Amazon, the first citizen science project which turns explorers into citizen scientists.

  • Accommodation includes a private room with mosquito nets, a private bathroom, and an open wall facing the forest. *Price per person, based on double Comfort Room at Refugio Amazonas and Standard Room at Tambopata Research Center*

  • Your stay includes three meals daily, tea, coffee, private guided excursions, and activities, refreshments upon arriving, and transfers to and from the airport. Private transportation only from Refugio Amazonas to Tambopata Research Center

  • A thirty-minute walk from the lodge leads to the 35-meter scaffolding canopy tower. A banister staircase running through the middle provides safe access to the platforms above. The tower has been built upon high ground, therefore increasing your horizon of the continuous primary forest extending out towards the Tambopata National Reserve. From here views of mixed species canopy flocks as well as toucans, macaws, and raptors are likely.

  • The light glares against the sheet, highlighting its white color against the dark jungle night. As the bright light flickers, moths begin to flutter towards it. You study them carefully, noting their shapes and patterns. By the end of the night, you might have discovered a new species unknown to science. Now, you get to name it yourself!

Day 2: Mountain biking time

  • As you navigate your bike along a narrow trail, you finally emerge from the forest, blinking at the unfamiliar sunlight. The view nearly takes your breath away. You’re perched on an Amazon overlook, high above the majestic Tambopata River. This view alone was worth the trip. But more than that, your Mountain Biking ride has been jam-packed with excitement, with new discoveries at every twist of the trail.

  • The rainforest is dense and silent, but you know that mammals are hiding all around the area. An incredible creature — a Giant Anteater, or maybe even a whole herd of jungle pigs — might’ve been here just a few hours ago. Back at the lodge, you’ll find out what amazing wildlife has paid the camera traps a visit. This is the AmazonCam Tambopata: a unique way for science lovers to learn about modern science and explore the jungle

  • You will have the option of a jungle night walk when most of the mammals are active but difficult to see. Easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories.

Day 3: Explore the Tambopata National Reserve

  • As you cross the confluence with the Malinowski River in private transportation, you will leave the final traces of human habitation behind. Within the 700,000 hectares of an uninhabited nucleus of the reserve, sightings of capybara, caiman, geese, macaws and other large species will become more frequent.

  • Tambopata Research Center awaits – a spacious boutique eco-lodge, with bar, a massage center, and buffet service in the heart of the National Reserve of Tambopata, is the only lodge inside the reserve in front of the Bahuaja National Park surrounded by dozens of natural macaw nests.

  • Accommodation includes rooms from 21mts to 83 meters suites with a private bathroom and an open window facing the forest.

  • Your stay includes three meals daily, tea, coffee, guided excursions and activities, refreshments upon arriving, and transfers to and from the airport. We assign guides on private small groups of 6:1

  • Stopover Chuncho Clay Lick, where every morning macaw parrots and parakeets of the area meet together to lick the clay and socialize.

  • This afternoon joins the Overlook A three to five-kilometer hike will lead us to overlooks commanding magnificent views of the Tambopata winding its way into the lowlands. The forest on this trail, regenerating on the old bamboo forest, is good for Howler Monkey and Dusky Titi Monkey.

  • You will have the option of hiking out at night when most of the mammals are active but difficult to see. Easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories.

Day 4: Join a party of colors and sounds

  • On most clear mornings of the year, dozens of large macaws and hundreds of parrots congregate on this large river bank in a raucous and colorful spectacle that inspired a National Geographic cover story. Discretely located fifty meters from the cliff, we will observe Green-winged, Scarlet and Blue-and-gold Macaws and several species of smaller parrots descend to ingest clay. Outings are at dawn when the lick is most active.

  • This five-kilometer trail covers the prototypical rain forest with immense trees crisscrossed by creeks and ponds. Amongst the figs, ceibas, and shihuahuacos we will go for a monkey search Squirrel, Brown Capuchin, and Spider Monkeys as well as peccaries. TRC is located within this habitat.

  • Ten minutes upriver from the lodge explore the island where is a tiny pond with a platform in the middle. It is a great place to spot waterfowl such as Muscovy duck, sunbittern, and hoatzin along with the woodpeckers, oropendolas, flycatchers, and parakeets that call this pond their home.

  • After dinner scientists will provide a night lecture, an in-depth look at the biology of macaws, their feeding habits, the theories for clay lick use, their breeding and feeding ecology, population fluctuations, and the threats to their conservation.

Day 5: Adventure to the bowl

  • After rising before dawn, you’re prepared for a unique Amazonian challenge: the Adventure to the Bowl. You trek down trails with your guide, moving from Terra Firme forest into Palm Swamps, crossing creeks and passing silently through elegant stands of bamboo

Day 6: Thank you

  • It is time to say goodbye, as the expedition comes to an end.

  • Your visit will make a direct contribution to Wired Amazon and the National Reserve of Tambopata.

  • You will take the journey back to the city to the airport for your national flight onwards

The lodge is located in the middle of the forest accessible only by boat. The experience was very unique and exciting. Service is great, and the fun part are the nature activities and tours the hotel offers for free. We had an amazing tour guide that had a lot of knowledge and was fun to spend time with. The rooms are totally open to the forest which is really cool the struggle is the there is no privacy at all in between the rooms, also food was pretty basic. All together a very unique experience. This hotel is the perfect blend of comfort and hospitality, with the natural experience. The hotel is reached by a hours boat ride from Puerto Maldonado, expertly organized and accomplished. Most staff are members of the local Esa Ejja community. The food is good and plentiful. Hot water is always available and lovely bedding features mosquito nets. There is of course no air conditioning (one side wall is open in rach room) and the electricity is off for a few hours at night affecting overhead fans, so I was glad to have brought a small battery powered fan for sleeping. But the best of the experience is the wildlife. Our expert guide Oscar Mishaja introduced us to nearly 100 bird species, along with caimans, river otters, poison dart frogs and capybara. A trip of a lifetime. Read all

Read all
