Rainforest Expeditions Guide
Hey, I’m Hendrick Johan Balarezo Apucusi, born on February 20, 1985, in Puerto Maldonado, Madre de Dios, where I still live today. My passion for nature was inspired by my family, particularly my grandparents and uncles, who are expert fishermen and chestnut gatherers in our region. This deep-rooted connection motivated me to pursue a career as a tour guide, which I began in 2009 after studying Official Tourism at the American Institute of Cusco. I also studied French at the Alianza Francesa Cultural Institute and improved my English at the Tambopata English Center.
While guiding, I’ve developed a specialization in plants, which allows me to share my knowledge of the rainforest’s rich flora with visitors. One of my most memorable experiences was in 2010 when I took tourists to my grandparents' farm, the place where I grew up. Sharing that part of my childhood, surrounded by plants and history, and introducing my grandparents to my guests was a heartwarming experience that I will never forget.
In addition to Spanish, I speak French and English, which has been a challenge but ultimately rewarding. My favorite activities include visiting macaw clay licks and hiking through the forest. I’m also passionate about citizen science projects like AmazonCam, which monitors wildlife with camera traps, and Discovering New Species, which studies insects in search of new species for science, both part of the Wired Amazon program supported by Rainforest Expeditions.
I believe we all share the responsibility to protect our forest. It’s a collaborative effort that requires participation from everyone, not just locals. My favorite Amazonian animal is the giant river otter, an indicator of healthy jungle waters. Being in daily contact with nature brings me immense joy and satisfaction, making me feel fortunate to be in the place where I grew up. What fascinates me most about Tambopata is its lakes and clay licks. In my free time, I enjoy reading and researching nature topics and watching documentaries. I also have a keen interest in biology and botany, which deepens my appreciation for the environment around me.
