AMAZON KINGFISHER
(Chloroceryle Amazona)
Did you know? Our boat rides to the lush, secluded Rainforest Expedition lodges frequently come across these stunning waterbirds!
You simply can’t reach the best eco-lodges in the Peruvian Amazon by road. They sit deep within the Amazon jungle, in wild areas where guests spot spectacular, rare animals on a daily basis. Because of the lack of roads, the forest and its complex ecosystems remain remarkably intact. Best of all, these beautiful animals — including the colorful Amazon Kingfisher — can live freely, unharmed by logging, hunting, and development. As a result of their secluded sites, you can only reach our Rainforest Expeditions eco-lodges by boat.
Due to their remote path, these easygoing boat rides down the Tambopata River are a blessing in disguise. Traveling along the river never fails to turn up sightings of eye-catching rainforest wildlife. One of the bird species that you can sight on these boat rides is the Amazon Kingfisher (Chloroceryle amazona). Perched in riverside vegetation, they watch the water for fish and other aquatic prey. Kingfishers make their presence known as they give their rattling calls, zipping across the river on quick wings. This crested, jade green bird is found throughout the Amazon basin, and ranges along waterways all the way up to Mexico.
Amazon Kingfisher Fun Facts
- Plunge dives for food: Like many other kingfishers, this species dives headfirst into the water to catch fish, crustaceans, and other small creatures with its dagger-like bill.
- Their shape inspires designers: The shape of the Amazon Kingfisher is incredibly adapted for aerodynamics. This bird has a pointed bill and head to lessen the resistance when diving. Kingfishers’ shapes are so aerodynamic that engineers used them as a model for designing high-speed trains in Japan! This biology-inspired design process is called biomimicry.
- Similar to the Green Kingfisher: The Amazon Kingfisher looks a lot like its smaller cousin, the Green Kingfisher! To tell them apart, check out the white in their wings and tail. While Green Kingfishers have a fair amount of white there, the Amazon Kingfisher’s wings and tail are mostly green.

The lodge is located in the middle of the forest accessible only by boat. The experience was very unique and exciting. Service is great, and the fun part are the nature activities and tours the hotel offers for free. We had an amazing tour guide that had a lot of knowledge and was fun to spend time with. The rooms are totally open to the forest which is really cool the struggle is the there is no privacy at all in between the rooms, also food was pretty basic. All together a very unique experience. This hotel is the perfect blend of comfort and hospitality, with the natural experience. The hotel is reached by a hours boat ride from Puerto Maldonado, expertly organized and accomplished. Most staff are members of the local Esa Ejja community. The food is good and plentiful. Hot water is always available and lovely bedding features mosquito nets. There is of course no air conditioning (one side wall is open in rach room) and the electricity is off for a few hours at night affecting overhead fans, so I was glad to have brought a small battery powered fan for sleeping. But the best of the experience is the wildlife. Our expert guide Oscar Mishaja introduced us to nearly 100 bird species, along with caimans, river otters, poison dart frogs and capybara. A trip of a lifetime. Read all

Read all
